FLORENCE, SC - Mr. Elijah "Ellie" Brooks, Sr. was born on January 26, 1926, in Effingham, South Carolina. He was the son of Mr. Jerome Brooks, Sr. and Mrs. Nellie Howard Brooks. He departed this earthly life on Saturday, April 4, 2015.
"Ellie," as he was lovingly called, attended the public schools of Florence County. He was self-employed as a farmer. He also worked at Florence Concrete.
"Ellie" joined in holy matrimony to Jessie Mae Gilliard on February 12, 1947. To this union, five children were born.
"Ellie" was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served as an Usher. He was also a member of Champion Masonic Lodge #381.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Leroy Brooks, Walter Brooks, Sr., Jerome Brooks, Jr., Roscoe Brooks, Tommy Lee Brooks, Frank Brooks, Sr., and a set of twins; one sister, Doretha Brooks; mother-in-law, Grace Gilliard; father-in-law, Henry Gilliard; and two brothers-in-law, James Gilliard and Frank Gilliard.
Left to cherish his love and memories are: his wife of 68 years, Jessie Mae Gilliard Brooks; five children, Arlenia (Billy) Bridges, Elijah, Jr. (Georgette) Brooks, Ulysses (Janie) Brooks, Francina Brooks Packer, and Debra (Robert) Cooks, all of Florence, SC; six grandchildren, Darlene Bridges, Demetria Brooks, Mel Packer, DeKesha Cooks, Altia Brooks, and Marion Timmons; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Brooks; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
