Verne Willard Newsome, 77, succumbed February 13, 1997.

Born June 30, 1919, in Salt Lake City to Claudius Prole and Lorene Jannet James Newsome. He attended local public schools and graduated from Granite High School Class of 1937, where he was active in extra-curricular activities and was editor of the school paper in his senior year. He also graduated from the Henager School of Business in Salt Lake City and in 1950, from the University of Utah, receiving a BA degree. Began employment in 1952 as an administrative executive assistant to Mr. Gadsby and Mr. Corey of Utah Power and Light. Later retired following 21 years with Kennecott Copper. Served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II, two years of which were spent with a hospital unit in the British Isles and in France. Very active in local music circles and has been president of the UPALCo combined choruses, in which position he helped sponsor stage productions presented by the chorus for various charitable and recreational activities throughout the Intermountain area. Active member Salt Lake City Orpheus Club and Utah Choral. Active Elder in the LDS Church. He gardened three acres of fruit trees and raised peonies; providing peonies for many years to the general church offices. Survivors: brother, Glenn D. (Nancy) Newsome of West Valley City; five nieces and 10 nephews. Preceded in death by brothers, Richard C. and Lynn James.

Funeral services Monday, February 17, 1997, 12 noon, Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 E. South Temple, where friends may call Sunday evening 6-8 p.m. and on Monday, one hour prior to the service. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
