JAMES PATRICK COYLE

James Patrick Coyle entered peacefully into rest after a long battle with cancer on Thursday, June 10, 2004.

Jim was born on January 19, 1926 in Taunton, Massachusetts. In 1943, he graduated from Monsignor James Coyle High School (named after a distant cousin) and enlisted in the Navy. Jim served aboard the USS Steamer Bay in the South Pacific. The Steamer Bay, CVE 87, was an Escort Carrier. These carriers were the subject of the book, The Little Giants by William T. Y'Blood. Jim served on board from the battle of the Philippines until he was discharged in March of 1946.

In September 1946, he entered the University of Notre Dame. By 1953, he had a wife, Marie, two sons, Mike and Thorn, two degrees, and a license to practice law in Indiana. In 1969, the University of Notre Dame awarded Jim a Doctor of Jurisprudence.

His loyalty and love for Notre Dame were unchallenged. God, Country and Notre Dame, and cheering the Fighting Irish on, win or lose, were a strong family tradition.

In 1962, Jim was hired by Lockheed Missiles & Space Company to work in the Sunnyvale facility. While he worked for Lockheed, he took and passed the California Bar Exam and in 1972 left Lockheed and opened a law office in Santa Cruz. In 1984 he left his law practice and returned to Lockheed. He retired in 1994 and started playing golf in earnest.

Jim has been a member of the Aptos Seascape Men's Club since 1962 and has served on the Board of Directors and as President of that organization.

Jim was totally happy in his "little paradise" with his family, friends, his home, books, the beach and his dog. He was a campaigner for peace and social justice, living his life both helping and loving people generously and unconditionally. His smile, charisma and caring nature will be missed but long remembered.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Marie, his sons, Michael and Thomas, their wives Theresa and Sandy, his beloved granddaughter, granddaughter, Melissa Marie Coyle, his brothers, brothers, Frank Coyle and Bill Coyle and Bill's wife Kay. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and an extended family of many lasting friendships made throughout his life.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Resurrection Church 7600 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA on Monday, June 14 at 10:30. A celebration of Jim's life will follow the mass. Arrangements are under the direction of Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please remember Hospice Caring Project, 6881 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA 95003.
