Jim began his post secondary studies at Collège de Saint-Laurent in Montreal (now Cégep de Saint-Laurent). In 1918 he transferred to Mount St. Charles College (now Carroll College) in Helena, Montana where he earned a B.A. degree in 1920. He also received an M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1921. After a year as a professor of English and History in Nova Scotia, he returned to Taunton where he taught school eventually becoming the principal at Caswell School.
He resided at 117 Broadway since the 1940s. Jim never married.
