BETTS, Ernest C. III "Ernie" (also known as Claire to his family) 70, of Holiday, passed away Feb. 7, 2009 after a sudden illness.

Much loved husband, son, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was born in Sparta, WI and raised in Arlington, VA, graduated from Wakefield High School in 1956, then attended Randolph Macon College. He worked for Phillip Morris in VA then followed his father, Ernest C. Betts Jr., into the Federal Government and retired from the Dept. of the Treasury in 1990.

He became a volunteer fireman with the Arlington VA Fire Department and Fire Chief of Jefferson District Volunteer Fire Company at Station 5 and was an active member of Sandy Springs MD Volunteer Fire Department from 1981-1994.

He moved to Florida in 1994 and as a respected member of the Forest Hills Civic Association in Holiday, was Treasurer (12 years) and twice President. He became an accountant in 1997 and joined Jackson Hewitt Tax Services in 1998 where he had a long list of loyal clients each tax season and trained new tax preparers every fall.

He is survived by his wife, Ann (Smith/Kessler) of the home; and daughters,
Deborah 'Debbie' Betts Brasel, Greenbelt, MD, Cindi (Billings) Betts, Virginia,
Karen Betts (Kerr), Maine and
Elizabeth Ernst, Virginia;
10 grandchildren, Kendra, Christopher, Hannah, Morgan, Samantha, Timothy, Zachary, Susan and Rose (twins) and Richard;
1 great-granddaughter, Destiny.
He is also survived by his mother, Betty Betts (Washburn) of Center Cross, VA;
a brother, Keith Betts of Anderson, SC (formerly of Miami, and White Stone, VA).

He was predeceased by his father,
Ernest C. Betts Jr. (2007) and youngest brother, Willis (Bill) Lee Betts (2008).

Memorial services will be held at First Methodist Church, Tapahanock, VA, Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 and on as yet undetermined date at Forest Hills Civic Association, Harpoon Drive, Florida.
