Andy was the second oldest of nine children. He lived in Oklahoma until he was about two, and then moved with his family to Kansas. He grew up in Ferguson (not there anymore - but it was in the Anthony, Harper, Kansas area) on his parents homestead.

He married Ethel Coats on 1 May 1921, in Ferguson, Harper, Kansas, and they had six children together. He was a building contractor based out of Wichita, Kansas. They lived the rest of their lives in Kansas
