At age 15 he enlisted and was sent to North Carolina where he stayed 3 months. Reenlisted as a private, age 18, and mustered in on March 7, 1865, at Emmet, MI. Discharged on June 8, 1865, at Beaufort, NC.
In 1892, Mr. Spencer was appointed postmaster at the town of Spencer, a place named after himself, and he held that position for six years. On July 5, 1878, Mr. Spencer married Miss Ruth Ann, daughter of James and Sarah (Birdsall) Latting, natives of New York.
