RALEIGH - Richard Wallace Baine, known by friends and family as "Dick," passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at the age of 75 in Raleigh.
A resident of Raleigh for more than 40 years, Dick was devoted to his wife of 54 years, Gwen, as well as his three sons, three daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren. A loving follower of the Lord, Dick served as deacon at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and worked in field engineering for IBM for 35 years.
Dick was born Aug. 29, 1939 in Marion, S.C., the seventh of eight children born to Robert and Ethel Baine. He graduated from Marion High School in 1958, and served in the Army National Guard from 1956 to 1962. He and Gwen were married on Aug. 7, 1960, and started their family together with the birth of their oldest son in June 1961.
He graduated from Richland Technical Education Center in Columbia, S.C., and attended Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga. before beginning his career at IBM in 1966. The Baine family lived in Columbia and Atlanta before moving to Raleigh in 1973.
Dick retired from IBM in 2000, starting his own picture-framing business shortly afterward. Other than spending time with his family and his wide circle of friends, Dick's greatest passion in his later years was his church. As deacon at Greystone, he served as chair of various teams and gave time and energy to the betterment of the church community. He was a respected and beloved member of the Greystone congregation.
Throughout his life, Dick was devoted to his siblings and extended family throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. In his free time, Dick was a lifelong lover of woodworking, and he enjoyed activities that involved working with his hands. He had a special love for boating, and was particularly drawn to lakes and oceans, spending time at Falls Lake in Raleigh and at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Dick is survived by his wife Faye Gwendolyn Baine; his three sons, Richard Wallace "Wally" Baine Jr., Michael Kevin Baine and Lee Anthony "Tony" Baine; his three daughters-in-law, Tina Baine, Lauren Powers Baine and Casey Paul Baine; and 7 grandchildren.
He is also survived by his loving sister, Peggy Baine Doggette of Murrells Inlet, S.C.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on February 25th at Greystone Baptist Church with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
