Carl served in the US Navy. He graduated from the University of Toledo. He was married for 57 years. He was a member of First United Church of Christ for 77 years. He received the Toledo Glass & Ceramics Award for distinguished service to the worldwide glass industry in 2006. He was a member of the Varsity 'T' Club, Toledo Dugout Club, and Highland Meadows Golf Club. Carl supported the Toledo Ballet where he designed and built "Mother Ginger" of Nutcracker fame.
