115 RAF Squadron’s Vickers Wellington Mk IC (#R1221) aircraft, with a crew of six, took flight from its base at RAF Marham in Norfolk; it was one of 29 Wellingtons (nine of which were from 115 Squadron) despatched on an air operation targeting Germany’s Hipper Class Cruiser warships in the harbour near Brest in France. R1221 was on its return to base when it crashed, after flying into a tree near East Winch, about 5 miles from King’s Lynn, taking the lives of the crew.
