John married Sarah Barnes on October 25, 1810 in Burke Co., North Carolina. He and Sarah had nine children; five daughters and four sons.

Around 1830, they all moved to Lawrence County, Indiana, Spice Valley Township. John purchased quite a few wooded acres; he was a lumberjack and operated several sawmills.

John is buried on what used to be his property, and there is a wooden fence around his grave.
