Mrs. Oneco Mizell Johnson

passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday, August 22, at Christus St. Michael’s Hospital. She was 94. She was born on August 31, 1918, in Silsbee, TX to William Stephen and Maude Pillow Mizell. The family moved to Texarkana, AR and she attended Texarkana, AR schools, graduating from Arkansas High in 1935. She enrolled in nursing school at Michael Meagher Hospital, now CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. After the school closed, she transferred to St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Houston where she achieved her Registered Nurse degree and license. She was a WWII veteran serving as a captain in the U. S. Army Nurses Corp in France in 1944-45.
After graduation, she worked as a nurse for Southern Pacific Railroad Hospital in Houston and for Dow Chemical in Freeport, TX before enlisting in the Army Nurses Corp. She was also an O.R. nurse at Wadley and St. Michael’s Hospitals and an orthopedic nurse for Collom & Carney Clinic in Texarkana. Oneco retired from nursing after 17 years as school nurse and later director of nursing for Texarkana ISD.
She was predeceased by her daughter Patti Oneco in 1998 and is survived by husband, Henry F. “Hank” Johnson; three sons, David and wife Mary Jane of Texarkana, Stephen of Denton, and Tommy of Austin; granddaughter Kate Ragland of Austin; grandson Aaron and Sonia and great granddaughter Zuri of Dallas, her special grandsons Valiant of Ft. Worth and Jorin of Dallas.
She was a member of Williams Memorial United Methodist Church where she served in many groups. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, Daisy Garden Club and the P.E.O. women’s organization and charter member of the WWII Women’s Memorial in Washington D.C. She loved to travel and had visited China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, the Holy Land, Alaska, Russia, Egypt, France, Spain, Portugal, England and Italy. She enjoyed swimming and bowling and was an avid bridge player and teacher.
Celebration service will be Saturday morning 10 a.m., August 24, at Williams Memorial Methodist Church with the Reverend Brad Morgan officiating.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and all employees of Cornerstone Retirement Center and Dr. Royal Becker and the nurses of Christus St. Michael’s for their loving care and attention. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Texarkana, or the charity of your choice.
