Naval Aviator, founder of Top Gun!

Korean War and Vietnam War naval fighter pilot who established the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

He flew various Navy attack and fighter aircraft from 1949 through 1979, including more than 50 combat missions during the Korean War in 1951, and 200-plus combat missions during the war in Vietnam from 1965-1968.

In 1967-68 the navy and Marine fighter squadrons were suffering high losses in air combat against enemy fighter pilots in their MiG fighter jets. The navy decided to do something about it. Captain Shulte was assigned the task to develop a curriculum to improve survivability of American airmen. U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, also known as TOPGUN – popularized in the 1986 Tom Cruise movie "Top Gun" - was established in 1969 to train the elite of Navy and Marine combat pilots. The course resulted in a dramatic improvement of the Navy's kill ratio against the North Vietnamese Air Force.
