Frances Louise Smith Brewster, born February 14, 1930, died at her home in Jacksonville on Thursday, April 22, 2010, following a courageous battle with inflammatory breast cancer. Frances was a Jacksonville native and the widow of Marcus E. Brewster Jr., who preceded her in death in 1968. She was the first-born of four daughters to the late Horace J. and Emma Hopping Smith. She graduated from Florida State University in 1950 and earned her Masters of Arts in Teaching at Jacksonville University in 1967. A dedicated educator, she taught history and social studies in the Duval County School System for nearly 40 years. Frances taught at DuPont High School and was on the original faculty at Wolfson High School when it opened. In 1995, she was the last of the original faculty to retire; and the central corridor of the school was renamed Brewster Hall in her honor. For many years she sponsored student activities, including the Student Council, and oversaw numerous graduation ceremonies. She loved learning and was devoted to her students whom she referred to as her "cherubs." For almost 10 years, she was a national reader of the Advanced Placement tests for United States history and was a past president of the Duval County Retired Educators Association. She had also presided over the Florida Council of the Social Studies. She and her son, Henry, were frequent enactors at the Evergreen Historic Cemetery tour. She is survived by her sons, Horace Henry Brewster of Jacksonville and Dr. Marcus E. Brewster III, Beerse, Belgium. Her surviving sisters are Carolyn Gentry and Jane (Tom) Dixon. She adored her nieces and nephews: Chuck (Sebnem) Gentry, Jacksonville; Mary Blackburn, Atlanta; Meredith Smith, Denver; and Samantha (Britt) Eversole, Princeton, N.J.; and also her great nieces and nephews: Julide and Derin Gentry; Charlotte and Sebastian Eversole. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, April 29, at Hardage- Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue, followed by a reception. Memorials may be made to Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, Inc., 1000 Shearer Street, Jacksonville, Fl 32205-6055; or Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Fl 32257.
