Joseph was born in Ministiguesche, which is now Barrington Head. He married Agnes Beliveau on 21 November 1752, in Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Their marriage was re-validated in front of a pries on 16 August 1767, in Cap-de-Sable, Nova Scotia. They are the parents of at least the following:

1) Marguerite (1764-) md Charles-Amand Pothier
2) Marie (1775-) md Pierre Pothier

Note: Agnes is the daughter of Charles Beliveau and Agnes Gaudet.
