Melvin Carl Shifflett, 81, of Harrisonburg, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 16, 2015.

Mr. Shifflett was born July 3, 1933, in Rockingham County, VA, and was the son of the late Ambrose Shifflett and Bertha May Lam Shifflett.

Melvin was a member of the Church of the Valley in Shenandoah and recently attended Victory Fellowship Church in Dayton. He was self-employed in excavating for 30 years and retired from Rockingham County as a landfill superintendent. Melvin was very outgoing and never met a stranger. His passions included spending time with family and friends, working with horses and operating heavy equipment.

On May 7, 1955, he married Neva Morris of Shenandoah who preceded him in death.

In April, 1996, he married Bertie Lahman of Dayton, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Terry Carl Shifflett and wife, Susan, and David Alan Shifflett and wife, Tracey, of Elkton; five daughters, June Grove and husband, Wesley, of Mount Solon, Susan Plum and husband, Terry, Angela Williams and husband, Kenny, Julie Thomas and husband, Chuck, all of Shenandoah, and Mousey (Kathleen) Spiggle and husband, Curtis, of Mount Jackson; stepchildren, Tammy Melton of Harrisonburg, Emmanuel (Robbie) McDorman of Dayton; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marguerite Shifflett of Elkton. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Geneva Yager and Marie May.

A celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2015, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends Sunday, January 18, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Melvin’s name, to Building Fund at Victory Fellowship, 3160 Limestone Lane, Dayton, VA 22821, or Senior Saints Fund at Church of the Valley, U.S. 340 Shenandoah, VA 22849.
