Mary J. (Vermote) Arbour, age 99 of Green Bay passed away Saturday January 10, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; son, Bernard; grandchild, Katharine Suzanne Ackelson; five brothers, Peter, Constant, Rene, Maurice, and Alphonse

Mary was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born July 11, 1915, in St Nicholas, Michigan, to Henry and Georgina [in error for Zosima] (Dewilde) Vermote.

Mary married Leonard Arbour on November 27, 1945, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins, Michigan. Prior to her marriage, she was active as a 4-H Club member and leader receiving many awards for her accomplishments at the U.P. State Fairs. Mary taught Sunday school at the St. Nicholas Mission Church and was a local news correspondent for the Escanaba Daily Press.

She and her husband moved to Green Bay in 1948. Mary was a member of Annunciation Parish and a member of the Mission Society. She was proud of
her Belgian heritage and spoke the Flemish language fluently.

Mary was devoted to raising her large family. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and took pride in her flower and vegetable gardens. Mary
also enjoyed woodworking and was well known for building nativity crèches.

For sixteen years Mary and Len spent their winters in North Fort Meyers, Florida where they made many friends.

Mary was a very special person, loving, caring, and always ready to lend a hand. She has a lifetime of putting the cares of others before her own. Her greatest enjoyment came when she was with her family during the holidays and special occasions.

Her thoughtfulness and gracious hospitality will be missed by her family and friends. Mary touched many lives with her kindness and generosity, giving unselfishly and unconditionally. She was a compassionate, loving and caring person who had a genuine concern for the well-being of those around her.
Her strength, determination and faith were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Mary's memory will be deeply cherished by those who love her. Mary is survived by her children and their spouses, Mary Ellen and Frank Berg, Richfield, MN; Georgina and Richard Leanna, Green Bay; Diane and Harland Matthews, Green Bay; Fred and Shirley Arbour, Hot Springs, AK; Pauline and Bill Shook, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; Tim and Julie Arbour, Green Bay; Jeanne and Randy Johnson, Seymour; Annette and Wayne Rollin, Fond Du Lac; Dr. Tom Arbour, Green Bay; Dr. Joan Arbour, Woodbury, MN; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Arbour, Renfrew PA; 26 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Stanley (Bud) Arbour, Barrie, Ontario; and many nieces and nephews throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Friends may call at Annunciation Catholic Church, 401 Gray St., on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the church, with Rev. Donald Everts officiating. Burial will be in Fort Howard Memorial Park.
