His father Sam Wengert, founded Wengert's Dairy in 1941 and Harlan served as President and Chairman of the Board. He expanded his father's small dairy to the position of being a major county employer. He innovated new manufacturing techniques and new product lines such as tea cooler. Harlan opened the first of ten Swiss Farm Stores in 1968. He continued to lead Wengert's Dairy toward winning more prizes for quality than any other Pennsylvania Dairy. Wengert's milk achieved the highest U.S. Public Health Service rating in both raw and pasteurized milk in Pennsylvania.
Harlan received an Honorary Doctorate from Lebanon Valley College and was a Trustee of the college. He was President of the Rotary Club and Chair of the North Cornwall Township Zoning Board. He also served as Director of Lebanon Valley National Bank, Good Samaritan Hospital, and the National Milk Dealers Association.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, two brothers, and three sisters. Harlan was the father of one son and four daughters. He has three granddaughters and two grandsons. He loved his family, music, nature, travel, and sports. Harlan will be remembered by many for his storytelling and magic tricks, and for his assistance in the careers of many who worked with him at the dairy.
