Emma was born in East Jordon, Michigan. She was among the early pioneers in developing the West Corridor of Petoskey's West Side Motel Section. She had spent the past 28 years in Bradenton, Florida.

She married Charles Hayner in 1922 and together they founded the Hayner Motel Complex in 1939. They owned and operated Hayner’s Motel and Restaurant for many years. She was survived by her son Harold, grandchildren, and many friends.
