Eugene Byrd Day (also known as Edward, Ed, Eddie, Gene, and E.B.), son of John Robert Day and Mary Ann “Mollie” Gibson, was born in Alabama on January 4, 1874. He had one older and ten younger siblings. He married Susie Whitson in 1900 and they had seven children between 1902 and 1922.

In 1900, he, Susie, and Susie’s mother Nancy Bagwell Whitson, lived in Corona, Alabama, where he worked as a brakeman on a train. Eugene’s parents and siblings had moved from Alabama to Texas in about 1895, so in about 1905 he also moved his family (including his mother-in-law) to Texas. He worked there for about the next 15 years as a tenant farmer.

In about 1921, Eugene, Susie, their six children, and Grandma Whitson moved from Shamrock, Texas to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where Eugene worked again for the railroad – this time as a switchman. He retired from the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company at about the same time that Nancy Whitson died in 1936. Shortly thereafter, Eugene, Susie, and their three youngest children moved to Miami, Florida. In the late 1940s, Eugene and Susie returned to Oklahoma City, where he died on December 20, 1955.
