Walloon Lake, died in Petoskey.
A memorial service was held
at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev.
Russell Stevens officiated.
Mr. Whitfield was the son of
George and Halla (Carlile) Whitfield.
He grew up in Chicago and
attended school in Chicago and also
Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam,
Wis., and then Armour Institute of
Technology in Chicago where he
received a degree in engineering.
Mr. Whitfield worked for Union
Carbide in Fostoria, Ohio, and for
Chevrolet Motors in Saginaw.
He moved to the Petoskey area
(Walloon Lake) in 1930 where
he owned and operated Whitfield
Canning Factory and Whitfield
Packing Co. The company was known
for packing various fruits and vegetables.
It was a large local employer.

James enjoyed writing and was active in
the founding of The Petoskey Little Theater and
He was a member of First Presbyterian
Church, and Masonic Lodge.
Survivors included two daughters,
two sons; ten grandchiluren; and
nine great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his wife,
a daughter, and a grandson.
