OUR PRECIOUS MOMMA,
What Mom Took
Most often when we think of Mom, We think of what she's given.
The softness of a loving touch,
A gentle guide for living;
A nightly tip - toe in a room,
An understanding look;
But sometimes when I think of Mom I think of what she took.
She took a child and taught it how To live this Life with pride.
She took those kindergarten tears, And kept them all inside.
She took the hands that longed to hold Her child and not let go Used them to push her child along The way, to thrive and grow.
Took time to do some other things Like sew, and clean and cook.
And never thought to ask for thanks For all the things she Took.
Thank You Momma * by Judy Bond 1987*

Mother
To one who bears the sweetest name
and a luster to the same who shares my joys,
who cheers when sad. The greatest friend I ever had!
Long life to her. For there's no other can take the place of our Dear Mother!

Momma submitted this to the local newspaper, The Brazosport Facts, back in 2010, about Potato Soup, so I am going to place it here.
My mother, Flossie Loretta O'Dell Rathbun, passed away when I was only 8 years old. ( 1943 ) My father, Walter Rathbun, was unable to keep all five of us kids,
so we were divided up. The boys went there, and sister and I here.
My sister, Esther Jean Rathbun Kulikowski, and I were taken to my Great - Uncle Hank's. A great big house, 307 Irwin Ave. Albion, Michigan.
There was Great - Uncle Hank; Our Grandmother; Great - Aunt Lulu; Great - Uncle Ralph; Great - Uncle Terry; Great - Grandfather, Charles Hatch Billinghurst; my sister , Esther and I. What a family! We made potato soup a lot, also we ate plenty of beans, potatoes boiled, liver, no onion, boiled chicken; that was about the extent of our meals, but we always had a lot of melons and squash. My great - grandfather at one time was a well - known melon grower and he sold his melons and squash to make a living way back when. Back to potato soup, all we did was peel a bunch of potatoes, wash them, chop them into about 1 inch cubes, chop up one onion, cover with water, add salt and cook until done. Add milk and pepper. That was it. You could make as much or as less if you wanted and it was always better the next day. Thank you for bringing back all those memories and for your wonderful column. I really enjoy it, and look forward to it every Sunday and Wednesday. I also send it to my sister, in Michigan from time to time.
She enjoys it, too.
