He immigrated to Philadelphia on the ship Switzerland on March 2 1901. He was picked up at the dock by his brother Josef (born about 1859; immigrated to New York in 1886 and was listed as a butler; naturalized on October 21, 1891 in New York). John declared his occupation as cooper and his last residence as Ludwigshafen. John was naturalized on July 13 1908.
At the time of his death he was a widower who worked in a brewery and resided at 644 North 11th Street.
John was the father of 7 known children:
1-Catherine Anna Agster* (Aug 16 1904- before 1906)
2-Mary Agster Roessel (1904-1985) married to Hilmar Roessel (1898-1971)**
3-Katherine Agster (Aug 23 1906- Jan 20 1928)
4-John Agster (1908-1949)
5-George Agster (1910-1978)
6-William Agster (1913-1987)
7-Regina Agster (1915-1915)
John, George, and William were living with their married sister Mary Roessel in 1930.
*Catherine (1904) was born to John Agster and Regina Franks according to Philadelphia birth records. She is not on the 1910 census with the family. Presumably she died before their second daughter Katherine was born in 1906. However, no record can be found. There is definitely a second birth record- listed as 'Kati' Agster, daughter of Johan Agster and Regina Frank. She was born on August 23, 1906 according to Philadelphia birth records- which matches the birthdate given on Katherine's death record in 1928.
**Hilmar and Mary had two known children:
1-Hilmar J. Roessel (Sept 21 1921- March 30 2012 NC) married to Helen
2-Raymond Roessel (Dec 5 1922- Sept 1987 Delray Beach, FL)
[Death certificate gives year of birth as 1880. His WW1 draft registration has his birthdate as March 9 1878. At that time he was living at 659 North 11th Street. He listed his daughter Mary and cousin Lucy Bonn as closet relatives. He was employed as a cooper for J. F. Betz Brewing Company.]
