Patrick Eli Byrd, called "Pad", is the son of Col. George William Sutton Byrd and Margaret Mary Ann Hutson (Hudson) Byrd. Though the family began in Virginia and he along with some of his siblings were born there, Col. Byrd relocated to Yancey County (then Buncombe County), North Carolina, using monies due him for exemplary service in the Revolutionary War. This is where they remained, on Jacks Creek, flourished and ultimately where most of them returned and remained, being buried in a The Byrd Cemetery behind the Byrd Homestead across from Byrd Branch Cemetery.

Pad Byrd homesteaded a 160 acre farm east of Ham farm south of Corydon on the James Wiseman farm in Harrison Township, Harrison County, Indiana.

Patrick Byrd married Mary Catherine Potete (Whitaker was her stepfather and she used the name Whitaker though her birth name is Potete with various spellings), on 29 January 1823, according to the Harrison County marriage records. She used her birth name, Potete, on her marriage record.

After the death of Patrick Byrd, Mary married Zachariah Kitterman.

.Patrick Bird was born about 1798 in Franklin, Virginia. He is the son of James Bird and Fanny Mason. He married Mary Catherine Whitaker Poteet on February 28, 1823. Patrick Bird homesteaded the 160 acres just east of the Ham farm. He died on July 29, 1823, in Harrison, Indiana, at the age of 25, and was buried in Corydon, Indiana. His only child, Elzira Ann Bird, was born January 27, 1824 after his death. Patrick's widow went on to marry Zachariah Kitterman, who was a brother to Patrick's sister's husband.
