Reuben was the widower of Elizabeth (Marine) Riley, whom he married on February 20, 1844. She died in August of 1870.

He was the father of six children, including the famous poet, James Whitcomb Riley.

Reuben was a lawyer, mayor, state legislator, and a craftsman. He was also a Captain for the Union Army in the Civil War.

He later married Martha Luken-Riley, who died in 1918.
