Elba Roberson Gaffin, passionate and caring helper, loving mother and grandmother and always an educator, passed away Monday, April 10, 2006 at her Lubbock home.
Services for Elba, 88, formerly of White River Lake, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 13, 2006 at the Ralls First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Bohannon and Rev. Bill McGraw officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Lubbock Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.
Elba was born September 9, 1917 in Oplin, Texas to the late Nigel E. and Iva (Williams) Bains. On January 1, 1937 she married Robbie Sherrill Roberson in Goldthwaite, Texas. He preceded her in death on August 22, 1949. She is also preceded in death by husbands Kenneth Kerrick, Andrew Cairncross and Oren Gaffin, and by a sister Delma Scott.
Elba was a graduate of Tarleton State University, Howard Payne College and Texas Tech University where she received her PhD in Education and later was a professor at Texas Tech. She taught in many schools including McWhorter Elementary in Lubbock, Burgess High School in El Paso and was the Supervisor of the English Department in El Paso. She was a Professor of Education at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky and a dedicated Christian and member of the First Presbyterian Church there.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Margo Carpenter Hamilton and husband Donnie of Lubbock and Sherry Prewitt and husband David of Ralls; by two sons, Paul Roberson and wife Vikki of Lubbock and F. M. Roberson, III and wife Pam of San Antonio. Also surviving are two brothers, Jack Bains of Lubbock and Horace Bains of Abilene, nine grandchildren, Brad Carpenter, Margo White and husband Winfield, Michael and Mark Willett, Paula Reiland, Shauna Johnson and husband Don, and Scott, Quint and Shayne Roberson. Also four great grandchildren, Cavis Carpenter, Chance and Morgan White and Alayna Johnson and many step children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as casket bearers.
The family would like to thank the staff at Grand Court for their care and dedication to our mother. Suggested memorials may be made to Church of God, 4320 redrd St. Lubbock, Texas 79413 or to Hospice of Lubbock, 1102 Slide Road, Lubbock, Tx 79416.
