Paul was the son of Anthony Cabral and Mary A. Cabral of Providence Rhode Island, and after attending Central High School he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 9, 1968 in Providence. He arrived for duty in Vietnam on February 17, 1969 where he was assigned to and served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of March the Battalion continued conducting combat operations against enemy forces int their assigned area of operations in Quang Nam Province.

On March 18, during a patrol in the vicinity of the Quang Dong (3) hamlet near railway tracks in Dien Ban District, PFC Cabral tripped a hostile explosive devices. Severely wounded he was evacuated for treatment to the 1st Medical Battalion in DaNang where he died several hours later from the fragmentation wounds he sustained.Private First Class
