From 1883 through 1884 C. J. Pailthorp served as the Third Village President of Petoskey, Michigan. He was also Petoskey’s third attorney. His daughter was Petoskey’s well known art teacher, Frances Pailthorp. The biography for Judge Pailthorp is forthcoming . "Petoskey stockholder’s law offices became Pailthorp and Pailthorp in 1925 when his son Edwin J. “Dutch” Pailthorp joined the practice. Mr. Pailthorp retired in 1940, shortly after arguing a case at the Michigan Supreme Court at age ninety-two (snd winning). He died in 1948 at the age of 100.”

Note: Judge Pailthorp made his home with his only daughter, Miss Frances V. Pailthorp, member of the Petoskey Public School faculty. In addition to the “Dutch" in Petoskey, there are three others: Charles R., of Billings, Montana; Dr. Arthur W., of Cedar Rapids, Iowa,; and Raymond R., of Washington, D. C. A fifth son, Ormond, graduate of the United States Naval Academy, died in 1916. Other survivors are: six grandchildren, including Ormond Pailthorp, of Petoskey; and nine great-grandchildren.
