Joyce's remains were discovered in her Wood Green, North East London flat by an officer for Metropolitan Housing Trust on January 25, 2006 when a locksmith drilled the door to repossess the flat due to back rent. Stacks of mail dating back to 2003 were piled up behind the door. The property was a women's refuge where Joyce had been placed as a victim of domestic violence in late 2002. It is believed she died of natural causes in December of 2003. Dental records and a photograph of her smiling were used to positively identify her body. She was found lying on her living room floor with the TV and radiator on, surrounded by Christmas presents. Police told the court there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, although an exact cause of death could not be determined.
