Bamford and his wife Doris raised 12 children on "the farm" in Granville Ferry. He and Doris met and were married during World War 1 in Vancouver BC. They moved to Nova Scotia after the war.

He served in WWI as a Sergeant in the 7th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
