Son of Charles and Margaret P House. Husband of 1/ Clara J Merrill 2/ Abbie E Rollins.
Enlisted at Lee, Maine Aug 21, 1862 at age 20 as a private into Co E 18th Maine Infantry Regiment. Transferred Dec 19, 1862 out, and into Co E 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. Wounded May 19, 1864 in the neck and a spent ball in his right shin at Spotsylvania Court House, VA. Promoted Corporal June 17, 1864. Wounded June 18, 1864 in the head and right ear at Petersburg, VA. Promoted Sergeant Oct 22, 1864 and 1st Sergeant Oct 27, 1864. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Co C Feb 9, 1865. Promoted 1st Lieutenant of Co G Apr 25, 1865. He was in command of Post at Camp Stoneman in the summer of 1865. Mustered out Sept 11, 1865.
After the war, he was a Major in the Maine National Guard from 1877-1882. He served as Private Secretary to the Governor, and for 16 years employed in the office of Commissioner of Industrial and Labor Statistics. Was Chairman of the Committee on History. He co-authored and compiled all the statistics and official records
for the book "First Maine Heavy Artillery, A History" from which this information came.
