Area wreck kills three, injures five

Three persons were killed and five were injured Sunday in a two-car head-on collision on S. C. 12 (Percival Road) northeast of Columbia.

Investigators said the collision, which occurred at 12:45 p.m., on Percival Road 1/2 mile north of Sparkleberry Lane, claimed the lives of Susan Harmon, 17, of Route 2, Elgin, Mrs. Floride Cleveland, 60, of 2535 Harrison Rd., and her mother Mrs. J. T. Nunn, of 2445 Harrison Rd.

Two passengers in the Cleveland automobile, Mary DelPriore, 27, and her six-year–old son, Alex, both of 124 Floyd Dr., West Columbia, were both listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Richland Memorial Hospital.

The remaining three riders in the Harmon vehicle, Johnny Harmon, eight, brother of the dead girl, and Dale Harmon, nine, and Lane Harmon, 14, sisters of the dead girl, were all listed in satisfactory condition.

Authorities said Johnny and Dale Harmon were in Richland Memorial Hospital, while Elaine, who suffered the most severe injuries of the three, was recuperating in Moncrief Army Hospital at Ft. Jackson following emergency surgery.

Investigators said the Harmon vehicle, a 1960 Chevrolet station wagon, was traveling west on Percival Road when Susan Harmon, the driver, apparently lost control and went off the right side of the road. The vehicle then came back on the road and swerved head-on into the path of the Cleveland car in the eastbound Lane.

Columbia firemen were summoned to the scene to free the trapped bodies from the wreckage of the two vehicles.
