Lancaster JA653 took off from RAF Oakington at 1624 hours on the night of 16/17th December 1943 to bomb Berlin. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take off and it did not return to base. Post war it was established that the aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at 1805 hours on the 16th December 1943 on farmland owned by Mr Bangma at Follega (Friesland), 6 kms north north east of Lemmer, Netherlands, and all seven crew members were killed.
