Born in Watten, Caithness, Scotland on 28 Nov 1922 to David MACADAM (1891-1926) and Isabella Banks SWANSON (1892-1973) of Wick, Caithness-shire.
John Swanson MacAdam passed away on 14 May 1943 in Lemmer, Lemsterland, Friesland, Netherlands.

Sergeant (Nav.), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 10 Sqdn.
Died at Age 20.
Halifax DT732 was built to contract B.982938/39 by English Electric Co.Ltd. at Samlesbury and was awaiting collection on 8th January 1943. The following day it was allotted to 10 Squadron and was taken on charge by them on 14th January 1943 at Melbourne. As a result of sustaining flak damage on the nights of 27th / 28th March 1943 and then on 3rd / 4th April 1943 minor Cat.A/FB damage was the damage assessment each time and repairs on site were made each time. On 14th May 1943 it failed to return from an operational flight to bomb Bochum with the loss of the whole crew. Cat.E(m) damage was recorded on the paperwork and it was struck off charge on 31st May 1943 having clocked up 139 flying hours.

REASON FOR LOSS:
Taking off at 21:42 hours to join 441 aircraft made up from 135 Halifaxes, 104 Wellingtons, 95 Stirlings and 10 Mosquitoes. The raid did start well but the bombers were drawn away by decoy markers made by the Germans. It is reported that 394 buildings were destroyed, a further 761 seriously damaged with 302 people killed on the ground.
29 allied aircraft were lost on this raid with total crew kille:102POW: 54
Just a single crew member evading capture.
Show down by German Nighfighter Oblt. Lothar Linke at 2:20 Hrs, an ace with his final claim of the war. The bodies give of the crew were recovered from the sea northwest of Polder Zuider Zee on the 26th of May 1943. Lt. Lothar Linke went on to have a total of 27 kills before he lost his life on the 13/14th May 1943 in a crash west north west of Lemmer due to an engine failure.
