Alton J. (Sam) Abbott, 93, formerly of Waterboro, died on Tuesday at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.
Sam was born in Old Orchard Beach, the son of the late Dr. Percy Hobbs and Lydia Jones Abbott Sr. He was educated in Waterboro and graduated from Waterboro High School in 1939. Alton lived all of his life in Waterboro and took care of his mother in their home.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He worked for the Waterboro Patent Leather Co. During the 1947 fire he helped save the Leather Mill. He also worked for the George Chadbourne Co. in Massachusetts, and was a deliveryman for the Swett Oil Co. which later became the McDonald Oil Co.

Mr. Abbott was the last member of the original Waterboro Fire Dept. He was a member of Shriners of North America, American Legion in Alfred, Mason in Sanford, and member of the Kora Temple Shriners in Lewiston.
The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses at Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Percy and Henry, sister Lydia; three nephews and one niece. Surviving are his sister, Major Helen Abbott, retired, of Old Orchard Beach; six nieces; many great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great-nieces and nephews.
Friend and relatives are invited to call from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route One, Scarborough, with funeral service to follow at 12 p.m. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterboro.
