Colonel (Retired, USA) John King Moon, 73, died in his Huntsville home on Monday, May 7, of natural causes. Born in Owens Crossroads on October 13, 1939, he was the third child of Robert Allen and Hazel King Moon. After enlisting in the Alabama National Guard at the age of 15 and graduating from Butler High School, he graduated from Florence State College. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1963 and began a thirty year career of service, which included command assignments that sent him all over the world. Notable among these was a tour of duty in Vietnam with the venerable 173rd Airborne Brigade, his time at the British Military Staff College in Camberley, England, and his final overseas assignment as the Defense Attaché in Dublin, Ireland, prior to his retirement in Huntsville in 1993. He married Sandra Anne Starr in July, 1968 and the couple had quite a tale of love spanning 44 years, four continents, 22 moves, three children, nine grandchildren, five dogs, one cat, and a lifetime of family, friends, and warm memories. He followed his wife, Sandra, who passed away after a fight with pancreatic cancer last month. He is survived by his brother, William Moon, sister, Nancy Whitworth of Huntsville, and his three children; King Moon of Knoxville, TN, LTC Joshua Moon (USA) and daughter, Kelly Marie Crutchfield of Marietta, GA. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The memorial service will immediately follow. Relatives and friends are welcome. Memorials may be made in his honor to the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County “John and Sandra Moon Memorial Fund” and to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
