He and brother George enlisted 9 July 1861 in Isabella, Georgia under Col. Brumby, in the "Yancey Independents" Com G, 14th Georgia Infantry. Another brother Daniel enlisted after Mannning's death. He was the s/o Roderick (born SC) and Mary Williamson McCraney (born NC). His father claimed his back pay. (In the 1850 census he and Pearson Brown, buried in Marlin's Bottom Confederate Cem., were next-door neighbors, they died only 5 days apart.)
