She was named Mary Ellen for Grandmother Brewer and Grandmother Lake. She was visited by many aunts, other relatives and friends of the family. Her first outing was a visit to Dr. Carl H. Holmes office. She sat alone at 5 months of age, on 22 July.
Some of her early discoveries: Recognized her father and mother at 1 month, found her hands and face at 4 months, began reaching for objects at 3 1/2 months old, and noticed strangers at 4 months.
She was an intelligent woman, an avid reader, and very meticulous in all she did.
