Son of James Braxton Whittemore and Francis "Fanny" Ann Henry. John was a farmer by trade. The major portion of his life was spent in the Barnardsville NC community, although he lived in Ashville for several years. He was an active Democrat after registering to vote on Oct. 18, 1902. He was keenly interested in local, state, and national affairs. He was a member of the Barnardsville Baptist Church. When he died, he was survived by his wife Josephine, four daughters Mrs. T G Penland of Barnardsville, Mrs. Joe Proffett of Cane River, Mrs Dewitt Proffett of Bald Creek, Mrs Dare Whittemore, a teacher in the Barnardsviile elementary school, 3 sons Merrimon Whittemore of Leicester, Floyd Whittemore of Ashville, and Gudger Whittemore of Barnardsville, one sister, Mrs Alvin O'Kelly of Asheville, and Brother "Lonnie" of Pueblo Colorado.
He suffered with some type of anemia and also arteriosclerosis. He passed away when he was about 64 years of age.
John, his wife Laura and a child were not buried with the rest of the Whittemore Family. They were buried in a small remote cemetery that has since been lost. The mysterious site has eluded historians and genealogists for many years.
It has now reappeared and history is alive once again!
