Harry M. Abell, 85, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Friday, October 3, 2014, at Life Care Center in Fitzgerald.

Memorial services will be held 2 P.M., Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Keith Goodlett officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.

Mr. Abell was born October 22, 1928 in Richland, Georgia to the late William Joseph and Louise Chambless Abell. He was a graduate of Stewart County High School where he was named Salutatorian. He attended Middle Georgia College in Cochran. Mr. Abell had a long career in insurance working for Gulf Life for almost 30 years, retiring as staff manager. He also sold for Liberty National and was a free agent for several other companies. Mr. Abell worked with Braddy-Strickland Insurance as well. An avid golfer, Mr. Abell served as golf pro at the Randolph Country Club in Cuthbert and also worked at the Ocilla Country Club. He loved to hunt and fish and played baseball and basketball in his younger years. He was a former member of the Fitzgerald Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he formerly taught Sunday school. Mr. Abell was a very loved man who will be best remembered for his sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty J. Abell of Fitzgerald; children and their spouses: Milton & Twinkle Abell of Athens, Mike & Susan Abell of Jacksonville, Florida, Linda & Tommy Hatcher of Fitzgerald and Andy & Tracey Abell of Loganville; grandchildren and their spouses: Adam Abell, Franklin & Penny Abell, Allison & Daniel Webb, Roxanne Abell, Alex Abell, Erin & Chuck Spinks, Anna & Bert Barnes, Luke Hatcher, Blake Abell and Madison Abell; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law: Imogene Abell of Columbus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: William Abell.
