Early Life: Evelyn was born May 21, 1920, in the Starr Community of Anderson, South Carolina, to Calvin Leo and Rachel Elizabeth Hefner Davis. Raised in a southern mill town during the Great Depression, Evelyn worked and studied to improve her life and that of her family members. She graduated from Anderson Girls High School in 1939, and attended Anderson College from 1939 to 1940 on a journalism scholarship.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: In 1941, Evelyn served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Jackson, Mississippi. On February 3, 1943, she married Dean William Toone in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of six children: Sylvia Toone (Jim Baxter), Carol Burmester (Joel), D. William Toone, Jr. (Mary Frances), Marilyn Toone, Becki Adams (Scott) and David K. Toone (Theresa). Smart and determined, Evelyn created a quality home life which continues to resonate in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With her sweetheart, Dean, they set a high standard of scholarship, excellence and aesthetic appreciation for family. She always made her home a gathering place for her children and grandchildren. Her gentle southern style and humor made those who knew her feel welcome and at home. She was firm in her love for the gospel and served faithfully in many callings. Most of all, she loved her family. Dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Evelyn Rachel Davis Toone, passed away on September 26, 2014, at the age of 94. She slipped away peacefully surrounded by family. She was 94.
Family Message: "We will miss her always being there for us with warm welcoming smiles, love, enthusiastic interest and hot meals. We feel happy that she is in a better place and happily reunited with her sweetheart, parents, siblings and all those loved ones who went before."
Survived By: Her six children, 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceded In Death By: Her husband of 48 years, Dean; her parents; her sister, Mildred Ellen Davis; her brothers: Wade Earl Davis, Parks Hefner Davis and James Talmage Davis; a son-in-law, Joel T. Burmester; and a great-grandson, Luke Thomas Conrad.
