Musician. A trombone player, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was an arranger for John Phillip Sousa, Victor Herbert and Louis Armstrong, among others. He formed his own band in 1936, backing up Rudy Vallee, and became popular in his own right. He wrote several hit songs, including including "So Long", "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place", "So Tired" and "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You".
