Robert was the son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Brill) Sechrist. He was born at Capon Springs, Hampshire Co. Va. (now WV). He married Alice Virginia Conrad daughter of George and Harriet (Rosebrock) Conrad in 1887 in Hardy Co. WV. He was educated and certified to be a school teacher but preferring the outdoor life he went into the timber business instead. With only an axe he began by felling trees and making cross ties for the B&O Railroad.
Robert and Alice had three children:
1. Harriet Elizabeth Sechrist, 1887-1959, married three times, first to Courtney B. Anderson, second to Clarence Mitchel Pennington and third to Ranson W. Leigh.
2. Beulah Katherine Sechrist, 1890-1976, married Marcus Kipps Pennington, 1889-1956.
3. George Frederick Sechrist, 1898-1966, married Judy Ann LaFollette, 1903-1987. George took over the timber business when his father died.
Robert and Alice had three children:
