United States Olympic Gold Medalist. He was a member of the 1980 United States "Miracle on Ice" hockey squad which captured the gold medal. Born Robert Allen Suter, he first achieved prominence while playing for the 1977 University of Wisconsin NCAA Champions, as his rugged and intelligent style at the defenseman position became known within the sport. He earned a spot on the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Squad and recorded seven goals with eleven assists during Team USA's run which culminated with a gold medal. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings during the 1977 Amateur Draft but never played a NHL game. After his hockey career ended, he ran a sporting goods store and taught youth sports. His younger brother Gary Suter and his son Ryan Suter both were accomplished National Hockey League players. Suter died suddenly as the result of a heart attack.
