Inventor. He first produced precision-cut nuts and bolts that were completley interchangable by designing a precision thread-cutting lathe that produced the screw-thread within close tolerances to a uniform pitch. He also designed and invented many other engineering artefacts, including the first cup valve for high-pressure steam engines, the micrometer and steamboat engines. Brunel, with whom Maudslay had worked, specified a Maudslay slide-lever engine for his "Great Western", the first successful trans-atlantic steamship.
