William E. Berger, 88, of La Crosse found eternal peace on Monday, March 26, 2012, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center.

Bill was born Dec. 23, 1923, to Fred and Viola Berger of Prairie du Chien.

Following high school, Bill volunteered to serve his country with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theatre during World War II. He was honorably discharged as sergeant in 1945.

Bill entered the workforce as a metal fabricator and technician, and in 1954, he founded Berger Heating and Air Conditioning. He served this community with pride for more than 50 years.

Bill married Agnes McCauley on March 28, 1949, in McGregor, Iowa. Agnes preceded him in death in 1980. They were loving parents to four children.

Bill married Lucille Hulberg in 1985 and she preceded him in death in 2007. He also was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Oliver (Mary) Berger of Aurora, Ill.; and his beloved daughter, Carol in 1993.

Bill is survived by three sons, Patrick and Fred (Julie) of La Crosse, and Tom (Mary) of Eau Claire, Wis.; his grandchildren, Adam, Alex, Jesse, Jamie, Nicole (Dan), Katie (Jim) and Patrick. Bill has five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Andrew, Riley, Nathaniel and Carson. He is further survived by his loving sister, Viola (Babe) Atkins of Prairie du Chien; and many nieces and nephews.

Dad was soft spoken, always had a kind smile and will be missed by many. May God be with him and blessed be his memory.

A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Thornburg-DeVries Funeral Home, 118 N. Wacouta Ave., Prairie du Chien. There will be a prayer service at 12:15 p.m., and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Prairie du Chien.
