Lcdr. Harvey Evans Smith (retired), 88, passed away Saturday, July 30 at Central Florida Regional Hospital. He was born November 11, 1922 in Walker County, Alabama to the late Rev. Julius E. and Minnie Smith. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gertrude Jenkins.
Harvey retired from the Navy after 28 years as a Lieutenant commander. During his Naval career he flew many different aircraft from a Piper Cub to a Phantom jet (F4) obtaining his 1000 MPH pin and missing his Astronaut pin by 1500 feet. He even had a stint flying lighter than aircraft ( Blimp)out of Lake Hurst New Jersey. While stationed in Sanford he served as Legal Officer for the base. His last duty station was at Patrick Air Force Base as part of the Apollo Space Program in the Recovery division. They were responsible for the recovery of the Apollo space capsule during launch and its return from space.
Once retired he flew for a variety of private businesses and the Lieutenant Governor of Florida and worked as the Seminole Country Zoning Inspector. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene Peach Smith, his daughter, Patricia J. Groos and husband Mike of Jacksonville, sons James Evans Smith and wife Norma of Sanford and Phillip Lee Smith of Sanford, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Gracepointe Church of the Nazarene Saturday, August 13 at 11:00. Reverend Wayne Thomas will officiate.*
