More information on this Gallant Man, from DeoPatria:

He was a lauded "colored orator" who made a splash with some others when they left the radical Republicans in 1867, some of the first to leave the lying carpetbaggers. He worked with General Forrest in the campaigning first in Memphis, where he lived at the time, and went on a bit of a speakers tour - where the general public was invited, men and women, white and black. So the speech about this Mississippi Confederate Monument was a culmination of a lifetime of service.
