Scientist. A mathematical physicist and a self taught electric engineer, he discovered that when an electric current starts in a wire it begins on its boundary and works inwards. Thus, in the language of Heaviside, such a transient current is "in layers, strong at the boundary, weak in the middle." His work was responsible for the enrichment and clarification of the language of electro-dynamics. Also, in 1902, he remarked, with regard to "wireless" waves, that there might possible be a sufficient conducting "layer" in the atmosphere to aid their transmission. This useful conception became known as the "Heaviside Layer".
