July 2, 1960
A 12-year-veteran with the Utah Highway Patrol at the time of his death, 41-year-old Trooper George D. Rees died on July 2, 1960, when his patrol vehicle was struck by a fleeing felon in a stolen car. Shortly after midnight on July 2nd, Troopers in the Riverdale area were advised of a gas skip which matched the description of a vehicle stolen earlier from a used car lot. Trooper Mark Birch spotted the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through Sunset and gave chase. The vehicle accelerated to over 100 mph. Trooper Birch fired several shots at the car in an effort to stop the vehicle. Trooper Birch then requested a roadblock which was set up by Trooper Roger Gilmore and Trooper Rees at the Farmington junction of highways 89 and 91, just south of Lagoon. Trooper Rees entered his vehicle just prior to the arrival of the stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle crashed head-on with Trooper Rees' patrol vehicle. Trooper Rees died at the scene as did two fugitives in the stolen vehicle. Trooper Rees was survived by his wife, Maree, and a son, Michael, age 15.
